During this unit, you will be welcomed to this course by looking at the US as it was finally recovering from the Civil War. During the decades following Reconstruction, the country had a boom of innovation and ideas, eventually leading to the Second Industrial Revolution. Along with these innovations and inventions, the US also saw a massive influx of European immigrants. We will study how this combination changed the face of America forever.
This unit will look inside the time of Westward Expansion and Progressivism. Both expanded the USA's means of production, its power in a changing world, and played a major role in shaping America's future.
After experiencing drastic changes in agriculture, industry, and technology, the US began to reach outside its boarders to gain more influence in the world. We will look at American international policy and how the country saw the value of 'walking quietly, while carrying a big stick'.
The USA's influence was higher than ever before and America was emerging as a top global power. America's new influence will be called upon when 'the war to end all wars' breaks out in Europe. We will see how the US dealt with, and recovered from, intervening in this international conflict.
The Great Depression is often regarded as one of the biggest challenges America has ever faced. We will look into how the US got into this mess and, just as important, how got out of it. We will analyze the variety of solutions that were proposed to get the country back on its feet, and how Roosevelt's New Deal eventually got it there.
WWII is, arguably, one of the most fascinating events in the history of the United States. Still pulling itself back up from the Great Depression, America will be pushed like it has never been before. It took true gumption to do the things those young men and women did during WWII to help the people of Europe. But don't get too full of glorious Nationalism; the US had some of its own questionable moments. This unit will explore the ups and downs of the USA's involvement in the Second World War.
After WWII was over, the US shifted its focus from stopping fascism in Europe to stopping Communism across the globe. We will look into how the US established its containment policy against the Soviets and how that led to a period in time known as the Cold War. We will not only look at how the US responded to international conflicts, like the ones in Korea, but also what came to be in the world of US pop culture and domestic issues.
During the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, the US saw the fight for civil rights explode. Popular figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, and others, fought tirelessly for progress. We will look into what events took place to achieve this progress, and the impacts that President Kennedy and President Johnson had on domestic and international issues during this time. Also, we will be looking into our involvement with the conflict in Vietnam, and how it shifted American culture.
The USA's progress during the 80s and 90s allowed for the tearing down of the Berlin Wall, and with it, the collapse of the Soviet Union. In this unit, we will look into how the US adapted to being in a league of its own as the premier world superpower, how the Cold War impacted lingering issues in the Middle East, and how we can directly link the problems of today with actions from the past.
